British pets tuck into unhealthy chips and cheese

A diet of unhealthy foods has fuelled a massive rise in the number of obese pets in Britain, experts have warned.

According to veterinary charity PDSA, there has been a nine per cent rise in the number of overweight dogs in the space of a year, bringing the total in the UK to more than half a million.

The charity is urging pet owners to show their love for their furry friends by giving them a healthier diet and preventing them from polishing off unhealthy leftovers such as cheese, chips and avocado.

The latter is a particular worry as it contains a substance called persin that can cause upset stomachs in cats and dogs and may even prove fatal to small rodents and birds.

PDSA senior veterinary surgeon Sean Wensley said that the rise in pet obesity was "extremely concerning".

"As with humans, obesity can lead to diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and other potentially life-threatening conditions," he noted.

"This means there is a real need for owners to help their pets lose their excess pounds."ADNFCR-1167-ID-18689912-ADNFCR
