Chondroitin relieves symptoms of osteoarthritis

People who suffer from osteoarthritis may benefit from taking Chondroitin sulphate supplements, new research suggests.

Chondroitin sulphate is a major structural component of cartilage and is commonly taken by people with joint diseases.

A new study, carried out at the University of Paris Descartes and published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism, has supported this use.

Researchers recruited 622 patients from France, Belgium, Switzerland and the US and gave them supplements of Chondroitins 4 and 6 sulphate (CS), or a placebo (dummy pill).

They found that patients who took Chondroitin sulphate experienced slower progression of their osteoarthritis and less joint pain.

"Further studies with longer follow-up and different outcome criteria are warranted to assess whether the beneficial structural changes associated with CS demonstrated in our study are predictive of improvement in the long-term clinical progression of osteoarthritis," the researchers wrote.
